My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren is a soul-warming story about Millie, who has always just been one of the guys and her four guy friends: Reid, Alex, Ed and Chris. They are all professors at UCSB and enjoy regularly hanging out, playing board games and commiserating about being chronically single. Millie has always been platonic best friends with all of the guys, but she was always especially close with Reid.
One night, after an evening of drinking and board games, Millie starts to notice Reid differently. Her interest is returned and Millie and Reid end up spending a wildly passionate night together, surprising them both. The next morning, both agree not to complicate anything and to just remain best friends. That's good news because there is a commencement ceremony coming up with Obama as the speaker and the gang has agreed to give online dating a try in order to bring plus ones to the event.
They start creating their profiles and Millie helps all the guys craft intriguing profiles that are scoring high-quality matches. She doesn't fair as well with her own profile and is inundated with guys sending unsolicited pics or asking for her cup size. Frustrated by her matches, she creates another profile under her middle name, Catherine.
As Catherine or 'Cat', she feels like she can be more vulnerable and open. After a childhood filled with the loss of her mother, Millie struggles with opening up and begins enjoying her newly found freedom online. When one day she matches with Reid, she is surprised but intrigued and starts an online correspondence, thinking he will realize it's her. As they grow close online, Millie battles with her increasing real-life feelings for Reid and her inability to forget about their one night together. Reid is also struggling but is enamored with the possibility of meeting 'Cat'. Things get messy and Millie and Reid try to navigate how to continue their friendship as best-friends-who-slept-together-and-now-can't-stop-thinking-about-each-other-despite-it-being-easiest-if-they-just-remained-friends.
I absolutely loved this book. I read it cover to cover in one sitting this afternoon. I had been reading a lot of Holocaust books lately with very heavy material and a romance was exactly what I needed. I fell in love with both Millie and Reid and my heart loved following along on their journey. This was my first Christina Lauren book and I can assure you it will not be my last - I need to go buy everything they have ever written now. It you're looking for a modern day romance that will make you feel all the things - this is the book you need!
Huge thank you to Rachel at Gallery Books for sending me a copy in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
