The Grace Year by Kim Liggett takes place in the dystopian Garner County where it is believed that women have magic that can lure men to sin and make women seethe with envy. Because of this, on their sixteenth year the girls are sent away to the woods to rid themselves of their magic so they can come back to the colony and live out the rest of their time as a dutiful and obedient worker or wife. It is called their grace year, but the only rule is that no one is allowed to talk about it. And not everyone returns alive..
Tierney is all set to work in the fields if she comes back at the end of the year. She is shocked when a wrench is thrown in her plan but she becomes more determined then ever to help as many girls as possible survive the year. Soon, the girls start going crazy and their fearless leader becomes increasingly unstable. Tierney vows that she is going to be the one to change the tradition and help the girls find their own voice. But in order to do that she must first survive her grace year and the woods are teeming with threats. Will Tierney survive or might her biggest threat be someone on the inside?
I went into this knowing absolutely nothing. I didn’t even read the synopsis. AND I LOVED IT. I feel like going in blind is the way. Think Hunger Games meets Handmaid’s Tale meets Lord of the Flies. It had be captivated at the beginning and i didn’t want to put it down. It would be an awesome movie or tv series and I’m just so sad that it’s already over! I listened to this one on audio and the narration is phenomenal! One of my favorites I’ve read in awhile FOR SURE!
Thanks to Wednesday Books and Libro.fm for the complimentary audio copy to listen to. All opinions are my own!
